Have you ever seen the Oscar-winning movie “Avatar”? Were you impressed by the beautiful scenery? There is a place called Zhangjiajie, where the beautiful mountain pillars were so captivating that it inspired the director of “Avatar”. In fact, the 3,544-foot Southern Sky Column was officially renamed “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” after the directors chose to film in this beautiful area. Located in the middle of Hunan Province, Zhangjiajie was recognized as China’s first national forest park and added to the UNESCO World Heritage site. Keren Su’s first trip to Zhangjiajie was in early 1980’s when it was very difficult to access. He remembered seeing many unique and beautiful spots, but there was simply no way to reach them. The geography was so different from any other place Keren had been to. The almost vertical sandstone pillars rose hundreds of feet from the bottom of the valley. He wondered how nature created this kind of artistic landform. The formations are a distinct hallmark of Chinese landscape and can be found in many ancient Chinese paintings. Keren can never forget the moment when the mist settled down, the pillars looked so ethereal as if floating in heaven. It took him many trips to figure out when, where and how to catch that moment. Keren is displaying his best photos of Zhangjiajie in this room, trying to recreate the same heavenly scenery. Hope you will enjoy the stay.
