Introducing the Chinese craft of carving, the Boat room is furnished with special hand-made furniture that might make the visitor feel as though he or she is floating on the water in an ancient Chinese vessel. Intricately detailed woodcarvings adorn the walls, similar to what one might have found in the imperial era--during which time not only royal and high official families but also prosperous business people, honored intellectuals and fortunate landlords adorned their houses with such artworks. In addition to being sumptuously decorative, these pieces tell many fascinating stories, both real and legendary, that reveal much about Chinese culture. The artist uses only the natural color of a single piece of wood and personal skill with the knife to achieve a three-dimensional effect expressing the theme and mood of each scene depicted. Keeping with the nautical theme, an antique mariner’s compass on display represents the philosophy of ancient Chinese geomancy. The spheres and symbols reflect the occult beliefs of feng shui, for which the Chinese invented the compass thousands of years ago, but the navigation tool also signifies China’s early advances in oceanic exploration and discovery.
